In the world of Dungeon Meshi, adventurers from all walks of life descend into dangerous dungeons in search of treasure and glory. The story follows Laios, a brave and somewhat eccentric swordsman, who, along with his party, ventures into a deep dungeon to rescue his sister Falin after she is swallowed whole by a dragon.
Desperate to save her before it's too late and with their provisions running out, Laios suggests a radical solution: they will eat the monsters they encounter within the dungeon to sustain themselves. From giant scorpions to man-eating plants, every creature becomes a potential ingredient in their improvised meals.
Laios is the main protagonist of Dungeon Meshi. He is the leader of his adventuring party, and an experienced Tall-man fighter. He is extremely knowledgeable in monsters and the like, to the point of being obsessive. This, in turn, has fuelled a lifelong desire to eat them.
His adventurous spirit and boundless enthusiasm for trying new foods often lead the party into bizarre situations. Though sometimes seen as reckless and eccentric, Laios is deeply loyal to his friends and family. His quick thinking and unwavering persistence saves the party from various dungeon disasters.
Marcille is an Elven mage and a member of Laios’ party. She is intelligent, principled, and loyal to her friends, going so far as to commit felonies to bring Falin back. Despite this, she can also be very high-strung and has a difficult time dealing with things outside her comfort zone (such as eating monsters).
Marcille has a lot of confidence in her spell-casting abilities due to her being a jack-of-all-trades when it comes to magic. She can often perform complicated or high-power spells with little preparation, a skill which her companions often do not appreciate.
Chilchuck is a Half-foot locksmith and a member of Laios’ party. He is shrewd and practical, rarely taking jobs from adventurers unless he is paid in advance. He generally goes along with whatever the party does, but will speak frankly when they do something stupid.
His job as the party rogue puts him on edge, as failure to undo or avoid traps can lead his companions to immediate mortal danger. Chilchuck prefers to keep his private life separate from his work, as he believes that the most common reason for party splits is interpersonal issues.
Senshi is a Dwarven warrior and a member of Laios’ party. He is knowledgeable about the dungeon’s ecosystem and is an expert chef. He typically wields an axe, but also carries a pot and cooking utensils. He ensures the party is well-fed and has a balanced diet.
Senshi can be very careless. He has a savant-like interest in cooking monsters and little else. This leads him to neglect maintenance of his weapons and walk into traps despite being warned of them. He holds a strong belief in only taking what is needed and giving back to the dungeon, and can get frustrated when others do not respect this.
Izutsumi is a Tall-man girl and a member of Laios’ party. She was previously one of Shuro’s retainers. She joins Laios’ party in order to lift her Beast-man curse. Due to her curse, she has cat-like tendencies.
Izutsumi is not actively aggressive towards those around her, but she is prone to becoming annoyed and hostile, especially when showered with physical affection. She is stand-offish, aloof, and blunt when expressing her discontent. She tends to be fairly self-centred, but is in the process of learning the value of working with others. She is capable of finding rapport with others and is even able to find her place among her peers.
